ELMWOOD PARK, New Jersey– Elmwood Park Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at 35 Market Street in New Jersey. When Fire Officials arrived they found a fully involved structure that was begining to spread to about 6 others. Calls for mutual aid was placed as 4 alarms were transmitted on arrival. The fire was in a Paper Mill owned by the Historic toilet tissue company Marcal. Firefighters arrived around 5 PM and almost two days later are still battling flames and brutal weather conditions. No injuries were reported but 500 workers have been now unemployed due to a total loss of the facility.

Per the Marcal website

“Based in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, Marcal, a Soundview Paper Company, is proud to be one of the oldest environmentally friendly paper companies in the US. For over five decades, Marcal has been reducing landfill by making our paper products from recycled paper. We use paper collected from residential neighborhoods, from the small blue baskets in office buildings, from unwanted junk mail, and waste from printers–all in an effort to do something good, to produce something that people need from this discarded paper. Marcal is an integral part of the northern New Jersey community. Our company uses recyclables from local municipalities and recycling facilities for our paper recycling process.”
